The word “different” is an intentional part of the structure of The Differentials, so one might imply the connection to the band being...unusual or different. The Diffs are not a band that strives to get listeners onto the dance floor, and that’s unheard of in these parts. The goal is to move the heart & spirit, before the body wants to get involved. The selection criteria was simple: Is it a great tune with hooks and harmonies? Yes. Does it represent a vocal challenge to any performer? Yes. Does it bring them right back to the fond memories of their youth? Yes. Did it shape their philosophy, feelings, or thinking? Yes. Is anyone doing it? Perhaps a few, if any. Can many bring fidelity or give justice to it? Not too many. Does it make listeners want to get up and dance? Not always, nor should it have to. As The Differentials interpret or "differentialize" the material they approach it is with reverence to the writers and composers. Some of the Diffs tunes are outright replications while others highy interpreted depending on if the juices flow or the tune warrants it.The Differentials went about selecting songs that became indelible anthems of a time quite different than we know today. A vibration that was unambiguously set never again to be replicated. How will these selections hold up to the test of time only time will tell. The prediction of The Differentials is the music will be regarded as immortalized timepieces. Generations to come will associate this music to their time on earth. These are classics that will never go away.
There are many more tunes in the stable. In fact there have been over 300 tunes that have come in and out of favor at various times. Some never made the list to woodshed or develop. Others were simply put out to pasture only to be looked at down the road. Click Here to see a typical Diffs sheet.
